Comp Air 7 - Walter Turboprop Performance

INDICATED CRUISE AIRSPEED
On a typical demonstration flight at 10,000 feet, with 3 to 5 people on board and full
fuel, prospective Comp Air 7 Turbine builders will observe cruise speeds of about 220 mph
indicated airspeed (IAS) at 100 lbs. torque, or about 205 to 210 mph at a typical economy
cruise power setting of 80 lbs. torque. At this power setting (about 95% N1),
fuel burn will be about 37 to 40 gph. Vne is 257 mph IAS.
TRUE AIRSPEED
As most pilots are aware, airspeed indicators are usually calibrated for sea level, std.
atmosphere conditions. In thinner air at higher altitudes, an airplane can travel faster
with less drag and lower fuel burn than at lower altitudes. In the thinner air, however, a
significant discrepancy exists between indicated airspeed and the speed you are actually
flying (true airspeed). Comp Air 7 Turbine pilots report True Airspeeds (how fast they are
actually going, easily verified by GPS in no-wind conditions) of about 250 mph TAS
during economy cruise flight at 16,000' to 18,000'. Top speed is about 275 mph TAS @
21,000' (max. power). For those who prefer to think in KNOTS, expect about 210 to 225
KTAS, depending on altitude/power.
CLIMB PERFORMANCE
Climb performance: climb rates of about 5000 feet per minute are possible with a Comp Air
7 Turbine (keep weight down during construction!). That's a VERY steep climb angle,
however, and if it is sustained your passengers will likely complain. A more comfortable
"cruise climb" of about 2000 fpm is easily sustainable all the way to cruising
altitude, at 150 mph IAS.
